Why is a Clean Manufacturing Plant Important

In life we are all effected by our environment, what is around us. All the people I have met during my career enjoy a nice work environment office, laboratory or manufacturing plant.
Clutter, rubbish, items with no logical place to keep, all create safety hazards but worse than this they create mental hazards. They affect how we think, often to such an extent that our level of attention to detail can deteriorate. A “nobody seems to care “attitude overtakes, and the working standard reflects the environment it takes place in.
If owner or manager of the area has no interest in a clean and tidy work area, it can often slide or just remain a mess of clutter etc.
So why does it really matter if the work area is untidy.
First, I believe safety is a major concern, do remember the child’s toys that were left on the stairs causing someone to fall. Well, now we have an even greater chance of incidents and accidents. Things to fall over, articles to bang ourselves against.
Second, to create more space to work with greater ease and not trying to manipulate the work around objects not required for the job.
Third, when we dedicate a place for all items, we can better find them when they are required. In a plant some chemicals maybe hazardous. So, safety comes in as a priority, reduce risk by storing the materials in the correct place. Tools, cleaning items all required for the work should have a place so that when you need them you can find them. Looking for things is lost production time.
Fourth, now the area is clear of clutter you are able to clean the workplace with much greater ease.
The workplace is generally not your home, the owner or manager can set the environmental standards. If they are for a clean and tidy workplace you are obliged to work to these standards, they become the norm for your daily routine. It should provide a workplace environment that is pleasant to work in. If the work environment is correct this will help towards a positive attitude towards the work to be done.
Of course, quality of work is also down to training and ability, but if the mindset is positive this is a very important foundation.
Today if we visit a car production plant, we will be amazed at the cleanliness it looks like a pharmaceutical plant even a hospital. Yet the human work is still repetitive, but the environment allows a positive attitude towards the work.
The above only scratches at the surface of this subject but it covers some very basic needs for a potential safe and positive workplace.
